Puerto del Carmen old town harbour

The first heat wave of the year arrived in the week before Ironman, it wasn’t as fierce as forecasted reaching 34 degrees rather than the 37ºC predicted and cooling to more normal temperatures for this time of year before race day. The last week of the month was quite cloudy which was disappointing for visitors although still warm.

Weather Expression: Panza de burro

I heard a weather expression this weekend I didn’t understand it was “Los alisios siguen trayendo panza de burro” which translates to the trade winds are bringing donkey’s belly!

Panza de burro Lanzarote

This is a Canarian expression which refers to the weather phenomenon that occurs in the north of almost all the Canary Islands during the summer months. It’s when there is an accumulation of low altitude clouds which act as a sunscreen, blocking out the heat of the sun and accompanied by a fresh, cool breeze. This phenomenon is caused by  read more »

Playa Grande beach in Puerto del Carmen during April 2014

We were a little concerned for tourists flying out for the Easter holidays in Lanzarote, when we saw the long range forecast for the island during April 2014. There was no need though, as the weather was fabulous including the week that the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron brought his family on holiday here.

The weather was pretty good for this year’s carnival season in Lanzarote. We enjoyed plenty of sunshine, although strong winds brought coastal alerts at the start and end of the month, which also felt cool once the sun had set.

What Time Does It Get Dark In Lanzarote?

It’s a question we’re often asked. We’re much closer to the equator than northern European countries, so the difference between winter months and summer months is much less marked – that means our winter days are much longer, but our summer days are shorter.

Playa Las Cucharas Costa Teguise_2

We’ve selected sunrise and sunset times for key months through the year to give you a feel for what to expect:

Mid March

In mid March, the sun rises at 0704 and sets at 1903, making the day a fraction under 12 hours long.

Mid June

In the middle of June the sun rises at 0655 and sets at 2054 making the day almost 14 hours long.

Lanzarote Weather, January 2014

It’s official, January was the coolest in the last 5 years and the wettest of the last 2 for the Canary Islands, according to the met office.

January weather Lanzarote

The first week of the month was lovely, with warm sunny days in fact Tafira in Gran Canaria registered 26.8 degrees, which is the maximum temperature recorded for the past 20 years. January’s average temperature (including night & day) was 14.5 degrees for the Archipelago, which was described as normal for the time of year, although the coolest since 2009.

Lanzarote was spared a lot of the rain that fell across the other Canary Islands, we didn’t have long wet days, more sudden showers followed by bouts of sunshine. Aemet confirmed that the mean rainfall for the seven islands was 55 litres per m2 which is not much more that the dry Januarys of 2013 & 2013 and similar to those experienced  in 2009 & 2010. We did experience strong winds on several occasions, which resulted in coastal warnings and waves reaching up to 5 metres in Lanzarote, causing damage to the harbours in La Santa and Arrieta.
