Wave breaking on the La Santa Coast in Lanzarote

The month of January brought beautiful warm and sunny weather for most days resulting in an alert being issued for the lack of rainfall in the Canary Islands and Spain this winter. The average daytime temperature was 20 degrees, there were one or two cloudy days and a couple of rain showers but for the most part the month has been amazing. Two yellow alerts were issued for fenómenos costeros on the 1st and 17th January for waves of 3 to 4 metres. Lanzarote’s certainly proved itself as a warm weather winter training base for athletes so far in 2012.

Lack of Rainfall Alert

Normally we receive alerts from the weather men for heavy downpours during the winter months of December to February for the Canary Islands.

Playa Las Cucharas after the rain

This year we are almost at the end of January and still waiting…….today’s alert is actually for the lack of rainfall!

The Canary Islands are extremely dry after a lack of rainfall in December particularly affecting Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura According to a spokesman from AEMET (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología) Spain has only received a third of the rainfall expected in the past year, December has been very dry throughout the country which has only increased during January.

Feliz Navidad Roundabout in Lanzarote

The month of December was drier than average, this can be the wettest month in Lanzarote but we only saw an occasional shower which might mean a wet February 2012, we’ll have to wait and see! Christmas day was warm but a bit grey, where as Boxing Day was an absolute stunner of a day with beautiful blue skies and sunshine. Unfortunately due to the disappearance of Margaret Holt we went awry with our daily forecasts when we joined in the daily searches to find her towards the end of the month. Generally through the month the weather was cool overnight and in the shade but generally sunny and warm in the afternoons especially in sheltered spots out of the wind.
