This derby clash did not disappoint. Three red cards, a host of yellow with both teams brawling and finishing off with a superb injury time winner and all played in glorious sunshine.

Traditionally on the week of the woman Lanzarote always show their support by carrying onto the pitch a banner against violence to women.

Prior to the match both sides were in the cafe up the road sharing jokes and laughing however as soon as the Ref blew for kick off there was to be no love lost between these two Lanzarote sides.

The Rojillos looked the brighter of the two teams early on with Louis Kennedy seeing a volley go narrowly past the left hand post in the 7thminute. Two minutes later and Yaiza keeper Doramas did well to save from a diving header from the Lanzarote captain Rosmen, the ball fell kindly to midfielder Vladi but the veteran from 10 yards blasted high and over.

The visitors then began controlling the midfield and which led to a change of pattern of the game. Javi Morales shot over from a free kick and then striker Miguel Yunes in the 29th minute saw his low strike flick off a defender but the Lanzarote keeper was on guard to tip the ball wide.

In the 35th minute Rojillos midfielder Javi Betancort picked up his second yellow card for trailing arms, only minutes earlier he picked up the  read more »

Away in La Palma against the fourth placed side was always going to be difficult but a man of the match performance from Rojillos keeper Agoney ensured Lanzarote travelled home with a point.

After being top of the league for many weeks the Rojillos have dropped to third spot. Las Palmas B are league leaders and are in inspired form unbeaten in their last 13 outings including nine wins. Second placed side Villa Santa Brígida are also on the march and are level on top and a point ahead of Lanzarote following five wins on the bounce.

This Sunday 13th March at 12 noon is the big local derby match versus Yaiza. With a win Lanzarote could return to the top as all the other three title contenders face difficult away matches however our southern friends do not want to join the party and also have an outside hope of a playoff spot themselves and urgently need to reduce the 10 point gap for a top four finish with just 10 games remaining.

The game took place in conditions resembling a British winter with a drizzle continuing throughout the match though this did add speed to a competitive game.

The first good opportunity fell for the hosts when striker Diego forced one of many fine saves from the Lanzarote keeper. Just a few minutes later the same player again struck and  read more »

UD Lanzarote 3 CD Marino 1

Lanzarote blew away relegation threatened CD Marino with three goals in the opening half hour to return back to the top of the league. The day previous Gran Canarian side Villa Santa Brígida claimed top spot with a 1-0 win.

Lanzarote now lead the table by a point however next week they travel to face fourth placed side SD Tenisca and any of the leading four teams could be league leaders next week which shows how congested the top of the table is.

C.D. Marino have had a tough season this year with many of their regular players and management opting for another club last summer; this has resulted with a team who are regularly in the top six fighting a relegation battle. Prior to today just a single goal was preventing them being in the bottom three.

The Rojillos objective was obvious from the start, close down and put the visitors under pressure early.

In the eighth minute Kennedy won his side a free kick on the right wing, Marcos Cabrera swung in a cross and a great leap from midfielder Javi Betancort saw his well placed header go out of reach of the Marino keeper and inside the left hand post and the Rojillos were 1-0 up.

In the 12th minute Louis Kennedy swung in a beauty of a  read more »

With just four points taken out of a possible 15 the Rojillos still remain top but only by the skin of their teeth. A five point gap just a few weeks ago has been reduced to goal difference and only a single point separates the top four sides.

The first half was played at an intense pace on a fast natural grass surface with both sides enjoying equal amount of possession. The first period ended goalless though either team could have gone in front with the amount of chances created.

For the opening 15 minutes of the second period Lanzarote were on top and were beginning to look the more dangerous however all that changed when defender Raúl picked up his second yellow card and the Rojillos were forced to play the remaining third of the match with ten men.

The hosts then had a couple of good opportunities however in the 71stminute the  read more »

Ten men Lanzarote come back from 1-3 down at half time and go within whiskers of taking all three points in a day that manager Adolfo Pérez´s men made history going 34 home matches unbeaten.

Even with this superb fight back the Rojillos have now drawn their last four matches. As fortune would have it none of their closest rivals picked up maximum points so Lanzarote remain three points clear at the top.

The first opportunity came in the 6th minute when Rojillos striker Mauri burst down the left flank, his cross found Toñito on the right but the wingers strike went narrowly past the far post.

Other than that Lanzarote were a little stagnant in the opening stages and were made to pay in the 12th minute. A corner was poorly dealt with by the Rojillos defence and striker Johny nodded the ball home from close range to give the Tenerife side a 0-1 advantage.

This brought Lanzarote immediately into life and just 60 seconds later left back Miguel Gómez powered in a drive beating the keeper with utter power at his near post from 12 yards to level the score at 1-1.

The hosts now had the grit between their teeth but the visitors were more than willing to play their part in what was becoming a great football match. Unfortunately the Ref failed to let play continue with some challenges and started brandishing yellow cards and Lanzarote´s discipline began to slide from being infuriated with the official.

In the 29th minute striker Rosmen picked the ball up in midfield, rode a couple of challenges  and played a one two with Mauri and then from eight yards he forced the Tenerife keeper into a good save. Fine play from the Lanzarote skipper.

Lanzarote were now on top and in the 32nd minute Toñito fed Vladi on the edge of the box but the Lanzarote midfielder had to stretch to strike the ball which meant his effort lacked venom and the keeper made a comfortable save.

Five minutes later and Mauri struck from the edge of the box but his shot was blocked, Louis Kennedy sweetly struck the rebound but his effort went inches past the right hand post.

Now came a sensational five minutes of football. A long kick from Carlos the Tenerife keeper was not picked up by the Lanzarote defence and the tall and talented Tenerife striker Oscar nipped in tucking the ball past an embarrassed Lanzarote goalkeeper to give his side a 1-2 lead.

Four minutes later and Lanzarote´s defence lost possession in their own third which forced defender Fran Gil into a rash tackle which clearly upended goal scorer Oscar. The Ref finally got a decision correct awarding a penalty to the visitors.

Oscar dusted himself off and sent keeper Agoney the wrong way to give his side a two goal advantage with the score 1-3. If Lanzarote thought that things could not get worse then they were completely wrong. Just a minute after conceding their  read more »

UD Lanzarote Toñito-with-two-assists-in-the-glorious-sunshine

This may not have been Lanzarote at their best and the score does not paint the whole picture. The Fuerteventura side fought well but to be fair only had one good chance to score whereas Lanzarote made the most of the few opportunities that came their way.

The stats don’t lie. The league’s top scorers, one defeat all season, stunning home form has all led Lanzarote to top spot and are clear of second placed Las Palma B side by six points, though one rival  SD Tenisca has a game in hand which could reduce it to four points.

The newly promoted opponents have struggled in this higher category but with two wins and a draw in their last three games they have moved out of the relegation positions.

With Louis Kennedy suspended and Brad Cockerill out with injury there was still a British person on the pitch. Ex Lanzarote player Ryan Macphee had  read more »
