The local system here changes frequently, at the time of this update you can apply for a N.I.E. number and receive the documents within a few working days. If you are moving to Lanzarote to live here for more than six months then apply for your residencia not the N.I.E number as you will receive this at the same time. If you are buying a property in Lanzarote but will remain a non-resident then you will need to apply for your N.I.E number. N.I.E Number The N.I.E. is short for Número de Identidad / Identificación de Extranjero this identifies you as a foreigner. N.I.F. Number The N.I.F. is short for Número de Identificación Fiscal, this is your tax identification. If you are asked for your D.N.I. you can either provide your residencia certificate or N.I.E. document. Why do you need one of these numbers? Basically it is an identification that the Spanish Authorities can verify who you are. It proves that you are in Spain legally and proof of this will normally be asked when you: Buy a car / property What do I need to apply for the N.I.E.? When you have a local address, complete form EX14, take a photocopy of this form, two residencia sized photographs (30mm x 25mm) together with your valid passport and a photocopy to the: COMISARÍA DE POLICÍA C/ Mastelero, s/n, 35500, Arrecife, Lanzarote, Las Palmas Telephone: 928 844 266 Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm There is a small charge (under €10) payable to a designated bank account, details of which will be confirmed at the police station. When submitted, the photocopy of the form will be given to you with an appointment to return and collect your N.I.E. How does this become my N.I.F.? If you have bought a property it is important to make sure that your N.I.E. number has been registered with the Spanish inland revenue which is called AEAT so that it is also your N.I.F. number. |
