World Cheese Awards 2016: Lanzarote wins 12 medals

The World Cheese Awards were held in San Sebastián, mainland Spain, last weekend. This year's edition had more than 3,000 cheeses participating from over 31 different countries. I caught a programme on Spanish TV just by chance, which was a report on the selection process of the winners.

I must admit I was impressed at the sheer magnitude of the event. A little bit like the Eurovision song contest but applied to cheeses!

So once the results were tallied, we are delighted that Lanzarote has taken 12 medals home, 5 more than last year.

Finca de Uga has been the cheesemonger that has won the most awards with a total of 5 medals: A Super Gold medal for their "Bodega de Oveja", 2 gold medals for "Alegranza" and "Pimentón" and 2 silver medals for "Bodega" and "Rojillo" cheeses.

4 more silver medals were awarded to the cured cheeses from cheesemongers El Faro, Tinache, Montaña Blanca and Granja San Roque.

And 3 bronze medals were given for the cured cheese from cheesemonger Flor de Teguise and the semi-cured from cheesemongers Flor de Luz and Montaña de Haría.

Our congratulations to the winners and keep up the yummy work!

Remember that there is the Saborea Festival this weekend in Teguise, so we are sure that you can try these and many more among all the delicacies that will be offered there.
