Please Note: We walked this on the 1st January 2011 following the disappearance of British walker Margaret Holt. This path is extremely dangerous now, there have been several landslides where the path is missing, leaving walkers to cling to the rock face or scramble over narrow ledges of shale with 300m drops. This has got to be the most extreme walk that we've done on the island and it was absolutely fantastic but I wouldn't attempt it again until I was sure that some of the landslides had been cleared!
We were dropped off at the car park just down from the Mirador del Rio that overlooks La Graciosa and spent the first 20 minutes skidding down the zig zag path to a crossroads of paths at the bottom. If you walked just to the right there is a huge deserted beach opposite the harbour at La Graciosa and the old Salinas - this in itself is a great walk and with a picnic you could spend the day on the beach and then walk back up to the car park which is a 30-40 minute slog up hill again. For this walk we were heading left, the first hour was a gentle amble along the coastline making our way slightly uphill, the views to La Graciosa were lovely and we had to stop and look back at the island until we rounded the corner and it slipped out of view. We were following a track that had been cut into the side of the cliffs about half way up, the ground was loose with rock and for most of the way there was a vertical drop off on your right. Looking forward there was a stunning view of a column standing and Famara in the background and looking back you could see our path along the cliff edge. We had been walking around 3 hours when one of the group explained that he had done the walk to this point before and that they had turned around here as his wife couldn't cope with the height and condition of the path, the thought of walking back and finishing with the climb up the mirador spurred us on and with a deep breath we scrambled over the scree of the rock fall onwards towards Famara. The hardest part was towards the end, we could see the beach and were regularly meeting people walking towards us who had set out from the beach for a walk but it seemed to be taking forever to get off the cliff path, we were undecided if to head down the cliff off the path so we could walk along the beach or keep going towards the Famara bungalows where a cold beer was waiting at the restaurant! I just had to do it, we had been walking for 5 hours, I was hot, thirsty and my fingers had swelled with dehydration, I headed for the beach and took great delight in pulling my boots off to walk in the sea and cool my feet off. |
