Lanzarote Information

The municipalities of Teguise and Haría and Yaiza are preparing for the homage to Virgen de las Nieves (Virgen of the snows) on the 5th August. If you would like to take part this year, please see the programme details below. The church Ermita de las Nieves is perched high above both of the towns on the risco de famara and although the walk is up hill you are rewarded with some absolutely stunning views! The locals used to make the pilgrimage to this church to pray for rain, when water was so desperately needed.

Teguise

The residents of Teguise will pay tribute to the Virgen de las Nieves on Saturday the 1st August with a traditional romería to the church. They hope that they will have more than 1,000 pilgrims on the walk this year. The procession will be accompanied by four folklore groups, la Gran Aldea, A.F. Guanapay, A.F. Guaguime and le grupo de folclore de la tercera edad de Teguise. This year’s donations should be basic food and non perishable products such as sugar, coffee, milk, tins etc and these will be distributed to the most needy around the island. The walk will leave from el campo de fútbol at 4.30pm and for those who can’t physically make the walk there will be a free bus leaving from the Convento de Santo Domingo a 5pm and returning from la ermita at 8pm.

Haría

The Ayuntamiento of Haría has the following programme of events, including a Gran Verbena on Saturday 1st August and the walk on Wednesday 5th August. Anyone wanting to reserve a place on the walk from Haría, should visit the ayuntamiento offices before the 30th July, the cost is €11.

Yaiza

The municipality of Yaiza is offering places on an excursion to visit la Virgen de las Nieves on the 5th August. The price is €14 and includes transport, and a meal at the Restaurante Los Cascajos. The buses will leave at 9am from Playa Blanca, passing through Las Breñas, Femés, El Golfo, Playa Quemada and Yaiza to collect passengers. Anyone interested in a place should contact the Ayuntamiento of Yaiza by telephone on 928 83 01 65 / 928 83 68 34 or go to the football ground (al campo de fútbol municipal) before 1pm on the 3rd August to confirm their place.
