The Sociedad of Tahíche is situated in between the roads of Calle Miguel Hernandez and Calle Benito Perez Galdos in the centre plaza of Tahíche. There is a children’s play park, a skate park and Lucha Canaria sand ring right beside it. It was founded in 1979 and is the hub of village life especially around the time of the fiestas of Tahíche which are held from 10 - 26th July each year. As with all the social clubs of the Island you can become a member or Socio to enjoy special privileges and responsibilities or use the club freely without joining. The sociedad of Tahíche has a great bar and restaurant which opens everyday between Tuesday - Sunday from 10am until midnight. It is ably run by José Luis who likes to practice his very good English. He told me his requirements for a sociedad are that it is a family based environment which everybody can enjoy, with economical prices for good food. His menu is varied for tapas and full meals, with specialties of seafood and typical Canarian recipes always on the menu. They also serve quick snacks such as toasties, steak sandwiches and burgers. On Sundays they serve “Sancocho Canario” which is a traditional fish stew with potatoes. The wine served is “Vino Casero”, homemade, Lanzarote local farmers wine, at 1€ per glass. A small beer is also 1€ with a large one priced at 1.50€. Coffees are, you’ve guessed it, 1€ too! The sociedad has a large function room, “sala de actos”, which can be rented out for private parties for a very small fee or is provided free of charge if a buffet or dinner is provided by the bar. It is the usual location of local weddings and celebrations and preference for its use is given to the clubs Socios. Also within the building is a TV room with giant screen, smoking room, private dining rooms, a library, a games room with pool and a football table, a meeting room and a cards room for chess, draughts, and dominoes. An English group meets here on Tuesdays to play whist and anyone is welcome to join, it starts at 7pm. There are also a huge amount of other activities and groups each week in Spanish, including a slimming club, cards and dominoes, and children’s dance and theatre groups. At the back of the Sociedad are the sports areas with two parks for bolas, the local type of bowling and a giant outdoor sports area marked out for football, netball and basketball. During the fiestas this outdoor area is used for all the shows and night time events. The sociedad has recently published its own webpage Santiago el Mayor Tahíche and it is updated regularly, currently showing great photos from this years varied events over the summer period.
