Pancho Hernández., Mayor of Tías presented the programme for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations yesterday, together with Eileen Izquierdo Lawlor, the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Lanzarote and Amado Vizcaíno, Tourism Councillor for Tías. Puerto del Carmen is a magnet for our Irish visitors, Lanzarote attracts over 200,000 tourists from Ireland each year, with a high proportion of these staying within this holiday resort. Tías council invited residents and tourists to join in the celebrations and “be Irish for a day”. The Irish President Michael D. Higgins himself has recently been spotted enjoying a few days in Puerto del Carmen. Lanzarote was also named as the Best Winter Sun Destination 2016 by the Irish Travel Industry, for the 13th consecutive year.

Previous editions of the St Patrick’s Day fiesta have proved very popular and attracted around 5,000 people to join in the celebrations. It has been confirmed that there will be a parade again this year, although it won’t travel along the Avenida de Las Playas, it will start at the Biosfera Plaza shopping centre and end at the Plaza del Varadero in the harbour. The concert stage and food stalls will be situated at the Plaza del Varadero in the old town, harbour area of Puerto del Carmen.
