This image clearly shows the Saharan dust blowing over from Africa to the Canary Islands, particularly Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. This event is known as a calima and can often bring insects such as ladybirds, dragonflies and even very occasionally locusts who I'm pleased to confirm die within a couple of days. A calima normally lasts for around 3 days and from the land you know we are having one as the hills will be obscured and sometimes the sky an orange colour. During the calima the wind is normally blowing from the wrong direction, temperatures are warmer and it ends with a rain shower to wash the layer of dust left away.
