Raggle Taggle Gypsies

Derek & Jake 1 Lanzarote’s hardest working duo are out and about on Wednesday 17th March, St. Patrick’s Day.

This duo only generally work one day a year together but certainly make the most of it!

Derek and his son Jake, 14 have been playing together for the past four years and are so much in demand this year that they are going to pull out all the stops for a shattering four gig paddy’s day bonanza.

Derek plays acoustic guitar and sings while Jake is the mandolin maestro, his nimble fingers making the double stringed instrument sing! The energy is infectious from this musical pair who enjoy the gigs as much as the audience. They love the participation of the crowd and singing and dancing is encouraged, get up and do your turn or just sing a long in your seat.

Their set includes some haunting traditional songs such as Finnegans Wake, Raggle Taggle Gypsies and Whiskey In The Jar, the big chorus crowd pleasers Dirty Old Town and Galway Girl and some more modern Celtic rock stuff with  covers from Horslips, Waterboys, Rem, The Pogues  and Steve Earl to mention a few.

Paddy's Day Gig One of my personal favorites is the instrumental “Miserilou” which is best known as the theme tune from the film Pulp Fiction. It’s a modern version of a reel and whirls around, perfect for dancing to.

The gypsies are kicking off at 3pm in the Rose of Clare bar in the Los Pocillos area of Puerto Del Carmen. Their set runs to about 1 hour 15 mins which gives them time to make the dash afterwards to Costa Teguise where the rest of the gigs will be played.

At 5pm they will be in Irish music pub Papa Jacks in CC Tandarena Costa Teguise where Mark and Claire will be dishing out Irish stew along with the Guinness. Later on in Papa Jacks the 3 bridies are booked for their trad / folk session.

At 7 pm Derek and Jake will be heading to the sea front area of Costa Teguise to Ryan’s bar, where the craic will be mighty with Louie, Viv and Craig, who are always up for a party.S73R0253

At 9.30 the last stop of the night is the big fixture at the Irish Bailey bar on Costa Teguise seafront promenade.

This will be their full session, so go along to join in with the singing and dancing that’s sure to be going on. You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy this great day out but it has to be said the Irish can rival the Canarians for their love of a party.

You’re sure to enjoy a warm welcome at any of the gigs so catch the gypsies when you can if you are in Lanzarote this Wednesday.
