Playa Blanca was just a small fishing village with beautiful beaches before being developed into Lanzarote’s third holiday destination. This photo shows the area in the 1980’s.
The area of Playa Blanca is situated on the southern tip of the island is being developed as the up market resort of the island, with villas on large plots of land and five star hotels. There is a fabulous promenade stretching along the coastline connecting Marina Rubicon right down to the lighthouse.
The exclusive Marina Rubicón offers high class shops and restaurants with a great ambiance and a selection of sports facilities.
The old traditional port of Playa Blanca has ferries that run to the island of Fuerteventura several times a day, you can choose from the high speed cat or traditional car ferry, Corralejo is walk able from the port so this makes a great day out.
Playa Blanca has the best selection of beaches on the island, within the resort you have: Playa Dorada Beach is between the centre and the Marina Rubicon port, it's a popular beach with water sports available for hire. Flamingo Beach can be located past the old harbour towards the lighthouse. Just outside the resort there is the national reserve area of Papagayo with fantastic beaches, there are water taxis from the resort or you can access them by car along the dirt tracks, you will need to pay €3 entry at the toll booth. The beaches are all golden sand with turquoise water and views over to the island of Lobos and Fuerteventura. There aren’t facilities so we recommend that you take food and drink with you, from left to right there are 8 beaches: Playa Puerto Muelas 130m x 10m There are a number of boat excursions that anchor off Playa Mujeres and Las Coloradas as they are the larger beaches. NB. Papagayo is also popular with naturists. There are lots of ways to explore Playa Blanca - on foot, hire a bike, take a Segway electronic wheelie tour, boat taxi, hire electric bikes and there is a circular bus route around the resort.
