We get lots of requests as to how to connect to the internet in Lanzarote from people either looking to access WiFi hotspots or places where they can buy a pay as you go data connection.
Movistar offer a pay as you go USB modem / dongle with sim card, the initial cost is €39 which includes €12 of credit on the sim. The way it works is that each day you actually connect to the internet €3 is deducted from your credit, this allows for 30mb of surfing, if you exceed this during the day a second charge of €3 is taken for another 30mb until a maximum of €12 per day for unlimited surfing. The day in the Canary Islands is recorded as from 23:00 to 22:59.
If you are more than an occasional surfer but want to stay on a pay as you go package, you can buy a bono of €19 for 1 gb within a week, €49 for 1 gb within 30 days or €59 for 1 gb within 90 days.
Remember to take your passport with you for ID when you buy a mobile phone or data modem.
Movistar shops are available in the Biosfera Shopping Centre in Puerto del Carmen, Deiland Shopping Centre in Playa Honda and on the main dual carriage way road near Los Molinos in Costa Teguise.
