Paseo de Puerto Naos Update

I was out exploring this week and decided to have a closer look at the new promenade connecting the harbour at Los Mármoles to the centre of Arrecife. Work started on the Paseo de Puerto Naos back in April 2009 and was due to take 11 months to complete.

Path open from Arrecife New Wide Footpath

This walk way is really important for cruise ship visitors to the island as they disembark some way from the capital and if walking from the boat there were no footpaths and the route took them through the commercial warehouses which wasn’t pretty or safe.

Harbour Viewpoint Footpath past Miac

I couldn’t find any signposts or sign of the footpath from the port so I started from the other end, here by the old salt pans you can see the footpath is open and there is now a new wide pavement following the coast road around to the viewing point and on to the Castillo San José.

Footpath Playa La Arena

From the wide sweeping bend the paseo drops down to the popular locals beach Playa La Arena which used to be accessed from a sandy track down the hillside.

Arrecife this way Big blue gate and fence

The footpath ends at the large blue metal fence at Los Mármoles which was closed when I visited! I can’t understand why the gate would be closed and the path not signposted from the port side? Does anyone know why – are we waiting for it to be inaugurated or is it a security issue? It isn’t possible to hop over this fence, if you followed the path from Arrecife to this point you would need to walk up past the scrap metal yard and back onto the road where Cargo Lanzarote is situated and around to the port. This doesn’t make any sense, what an absolute waste of this beautiful walkway, no wonder I’ve not seen anyone using it!!
