In a new tourism marketing initiative, 100 Canarian residents aged between 18 and 35 were selected to be ambassadors of the Canary Islands for “Operación No Winter Blues”. Yolanda Perdomo, managing director of the Canary Islands Tourist Board, said that the board had advertised for people from all of the islands aged 18-35 to go on an adventure journey to a surprise destination.
The ambassadors only knew of their destination when they arrived on the 19th October to check in at the airport in Gran Canaria – the first country to be visited on the scheme was Reykjavik in Iceland, Perdomo explained that the Canary Islands and Iceland have much in common except for the climate. During the visit 100 lucky Icelandic residents will be invited for a free trip back to the Canary Islands to shake off their “winter blues”.
More than 2,000 residents registered for the opportunity and attended castings last week in Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, representatives were chosen from all seven of the Canary Islands. The campaign is based on the original name of the Fortunate Islands and the ambassadors want to share our good fortune with the selected countries, Operación No Winter Blues is to be featured in 14 places within Europe and last until mid December.
