Ocean Lava Triathlon

The first Ocean Lava Triathlon took place over the weekend, and it was a fantastic start to a new event for the island. Here at Lanzarote Information, we were proud to have been sponsors and also to help out during the lead up and during race day as volunteers.

The start was atmospheric, with moody skies and a flat calm for the swim leg. That was followed by a cycle ride that pro athlete and winner Bert Jammaer described as the hardest he’s ever done in an Olympic distance triathlon, with the murderous mountain road at Femes as part of the course. And finally the sun came out in the afternoon, as the athletes completed their half marathon along the ocean front in Puerto del Carmen.

The day was filled with humour and excitement as a mixture of professional athletes, local people and teams (including one disabled) team competed and enjoyed themselves.

It was rounded off with a fabulous dinner at Amura in Puero Calero, where the prizes were awarded and the film made of the day by Mark Bennett was premiered to an audience of athletes, their families and representatives of from the Lanzarote Cabildo and Ayuntamientos.
