The Cabildo of Lanzarote and Arrecife Bus have signed an agreement to add eight new buses to the islands fleet.
Six conventional buses and two minibuses could be in operation from September, if not by the end of this year, the investment of 1,428,880 Euros has been split between the Cabildo and the company. The buses are all of the latest generation in terms of accessibility, safety and environmentally friendly with minimum CO2 emissions.
In principle the 14m long buses will be covering the service between the resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. The smaller minibuses will cover routes with less passengers such as Costa Teguise to Famara and San Bartolomé to Playa Honda.
Vice President and Minister for Transport, Joaquín Caraballo said that the addition of these eight buses will reduce the average age of the fleet which is six years as well as re-enforcing the no 3 line which connects Costa Teguise, Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. He also reiterated the major investment in the Arrecife Bus Station as well as the new uniformed bus stops being installed across the island and mini bus station planned for Puerto del Carmen, which is open to tender at the moment.
The preferred location for the small bus station (Intercambiador) in Puerto del Carmen is on the land by the IES secondary school and nursery on Avenida Juan Carlos I. The project has a deadline of six months and will provide a terminal for passengers in the resort for the circular line 34 to Tías, a new interior line planned for Puerto del Carmen as well as the intercity lines. Plans include ladies and gents toilets, a pergola to shade passengers in transit, three platforms with electronic information displays and an electrical outlet to recharge hybrid new generation vehicles.
Esther Cabrera representing Arrecife Bus said that the forecast for passengers using public transport in Lanzarote is around three million for this year but they hope to surpass this figure with the introduction of these new buses.
Arrecife Bus has a new brand, you may have already noticed that the signage on the buses is now Intercity Lanzarote. Detailed timetables for all of the buses in Lanzarote can be found on www.intercitylanzarote.com
