You may have noticed the line of men in orange uniform with white hats working the hillside when passing through Los Valles. They are planting the hillside as part of the project II Fase de Restauración Hidrológica y Forestal de La Cuenca Alta del Barranco de La Espoleta Hasta El Núcleo Urbano de los Valles TM de Teguise. Gesplan (Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental) are responsible for the project, you can see thousands of indigenous plants now in situ in their black tubes dotted along the barranco. The young plants have been placed inside protective netting which stops them from being eaten by rabbits and goats and helps to trap moisture from the clouds to water them. A protective layer of picón has also been placed around the base of each plant. A similar scheme for reforestation is in place in Haría, the planting on these hilltops aims to stop soil erosion and encourage wildlife. |
