Mala Music Session, 21st February 2010

This Sunday, 21st February, from 4-6 pm The 3 Bridies return to Don Quijote in Mala for another afternoon of Irish traditional & folk music.

3 BridiesThis follows their super successful first Sunday session a few weeks ago.

The three girls, Kate from Dublin, Clare a Northerner and Jacqueline from the Scottish Highlands have got together an easy listening, chilled set which takes inspiration from the Celtic woman show. There is a fascinating mix of traditional songs. Many of which have been reworked with a modern twist, together with some more current hits. This Sunday session just roars along with a real feel-good flavour.

On the previous session we arrived at Don Quijote restaurant in Mala on a blistering hot afternoon and settled on the shady terrace to enjoy the music. Cool beers where very much the order of the day and came “German style” with really frothy tops. The food is also well worth a mention: really tasty homemade tapas as well as a comprehensive lunch and dinner menu. We enjoyed a selection of tapas including a few more unusual dishes, the baked leeks were heavenly and the sticky chicken wings really tasty.

Kate started the set in great style and sang and played guitar to Wonder Child and Woman’s Heart. Kate leads the vocals and although she does play drums, bass and bohdran is only playing guitar during the afternoon gig.

Clare plays a whole parley of wind instruments including sax, harmonica, whistle, and flute with her newest instrument being the EWI. This stands for electric wind instrument and is an amazing piece of kit with a huge span of 8 octaves and is described as the most expressive electronic wind instrument around today.

Haunting flute in Fields of Gold and Caladonia set the pace with everyone enjoying the total trad sounds of the whistle in Ride On amongst other great tunes.

Jacqueline has recently returned to Lanzarote and had been here for 7 years both teaching & playing music. She plays piano and accordion with the 3 bridies.  The accordion is played with such gusto it’s quite impossible to stop your feet from tapping.

Lead by Kate, the three bridies have a distinctive vocal harmony sound which is just such a pleasure to listen to.
