Sixty two prisoners serving time on the mainland of Spain were transferred to Lanzarote on Wednesday.
The move was due to a lack of space in prison on the Peninsula, normally the transfer wouldn’t have been made as prisoners are usually allocated to prisons close to their family. These prisoners were selected for the transfer to this island as they have roots from Lanzarote or Fuerteventura which solved the problem.
Five Guardia Civil trucks transported the prisoners to the Centro Penitenciario in Tahíche which increased the total number of residents there to over 350. Following the extension of the prison which was completed in March this year, there is a capacity for 502 prisoners in Lanzarote.
