Looking back over the month of July the weather in Lanzarote was not good, but then I looked back over the past two years and I think my expectation was too high.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t plan for a holiday here in July, there have been plenty of opportunities to relax on the beach and get a great tan, it’s just not been all blue skies and sunshine. Typically the mornings have been cloudy, the resorts have generally seen sunshine by midday with clear sunny afternoons. We had one or two yellow alerts issued for strong seas and wind during the month. Temperatures have reached 28-30 degrees most days.
Looking at the annual weather charts there is an average of 10 hours sunshine each day rather than 11 in June and August – this must account for the cloudy starts! July is also the windiest month of the year and although the rainfall doesn’t register for the month there have been some occasional light showers especially in the hills.
Conditions were challenging for the PWA World Tour in Costa Teguise, the trade winds only kicked in during the afternoon with 15-20 knots and small waves for the freestyle windsurfers. Judges at the Circuito Nacional de Kiteboarding described the conditions to have been the best of the kitesurfing championships so far, the wind and waves were just excellent for the competition in Famara.
