Lanzarote Review - Mulligans, Puerto del Carmen

Mulligans has been around long enough on The Strip in Puerto del Carmen for most regular tourists and all residents to know the place. We decided to meet with Joe and Jason to find out how the business continues has continued to thrive for so long.

Bar

The first thing that hit me when I walked in during a weekday morning was how big and spacious the place is. It’s simply huge, and that means it’s airy and comfortable. There are two full bars, booths on a raised platform, and a whole separate area for people who want to focus on eating

usual-suspects.

And it’s worth talking about food at this point. Joe describes the cuisine as “Better than pub grub” and it is exactly that. Good quality food, freshly prepared and served in decent portions. The kitchen is a proper one – all stainless steel and very big – and there’s nothing pretentious about what is delivered, but the quality is exceptional.

The thing most people talk about when it comes to Mulligans is the entertainment, and Jason is rightly proud of the fact that so much effort goes into that part of their reputation. The house band is called The Usual Suspects, and they are a full time, professional outfit. And once a month, Mulligans presents it’s big band night, which I’m told is an amazing night of big band and swing music, featuring classics from the likes of Sinatra and the other Rat Pack stars of the 1960’s. We’ll be going along to that event later this month and we’ll take some photos and video of it.. The big band night is on the last Sunday of each month.

As well as offering live music every night, the bar shows all the major sporting events on it’s impressive TV System.

I’ve never been a fan of on street PR people on The Strip in Puerto del Carmen, and I know from feedback that many readers here feel the same way. Mulligans does have people at the door, but their role is very specific – they are simply there to help people who want to know more about what’s on offer, and they have instructions not to harass anybody or chase after them. The team also don’t employ the “Free shot” tactic to get people into the bar. They just offered good drinks at reasonable prices.

One of the areas of the business where they are seeing an expansion recently is with private parties. Because of the size of the place, they can cope with big numbers, and they can even open a separate bar for any group and segregate their tables from the rest of the bar area. It can make for a fabulous night for a wedding celebration, an office party or just a large group of friends who want to get together to enjoy a special night out. The chef will suggest a menu appropriate to the occasion.

I enjoyed my tour and I enjoyed my chat with Joe and Jason. Mulligans continues to be successful not because of any clever marketing or special deals, but because they do what they do well – good food, great service and top class entertainment.

Look out for more from our upcoming visits.
