Visiting La Graciosa is like stepping back in time, with only 700 inhabitants and beautiful sandy beaches the island of La Graciosa is a great destination for a day out from Lanzarote. La Graciosa is 2km North of Lanzarote, the island has a school, post office, clinic, grocery stores, a bank and a handful of restaurants. The streets are unpaved sandy tracks and motor vehicles are prohibited except for the ones licensed for special purposes. The total area of the island is 29 km2 it is the smallest inhabited island in the Canary Islands, mountains lie to the North Western end of the island and the land is extremely arid. There are two villages, Caleta de Sebo is the main area with the harbour and along the coast is Pedro Barba. Historically the island of La Graciosa was raided by pirates and believed to have been the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s book “Treasure Island” with tales of pirates and buried gold.
