Lanzarote Campers Beware!

Campers at Playa de San Juan in Famara on Wednesday were rudely awakened at 7.30am by El Seprona who evicted them off the beach! It seems that the for the time being it's not acceptable to camp in non designated areas. The action has sparked numerous comments from local residents who believe that you should be able to camp in Lanzarote as long as there is no damage to the environment and that any rubbish is removed, in particular excrement.

The Ministerio de Medio Ambiente in Las Palmas have explained that the Ley de Costas (law of the coastline) prohibits any camping in sand. The law states that any person that erects a tent in a prohibited coastal place will face a fine of up to €30.05 Euros per square metre per day. These evicted campers were not fined this time but ordered to leave the beach. The offending campers said that they have been camping in Lanzarote for the past 20 years and were outraged at the eviction.

There are designated camping areas at La Graciosa which is open all year round, both San Juan and Papagayo have camping but only in the summer months. All of these campsites are provided free of charge and paid for by the local councils. The island of Lanzarote is crying out for a purpose built campsite, one that has a shower block and toilet facilities where you can camp all year round and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, entry could be charged at a few Euros per night to help cover running costs.
