Did you know that Lanzarote has the largest aquarium in the Canary Islands? The Lanzarote Aquarium is situated in Costa Teguise in the El Trebol area just behind Playa Las Cucharas. The aquarium has more than one million litres of water and hundreds of marine species for you to enjoy such as a variety of tropical fish, rays, moray eels, colourful anemones and much more.
Do you fancy diving with the sharks? The Lanzarote Aquarium has collaborated with local Costa Teguise diving school Aquatis to offer you the chance to dive in the aquarium with sharks! You don’t need to be an experienced diver to try this, you will dive in a local swimming pool first to get the hang of the equipment before transferring to the Aquarium where you will submerge in the tank ‘Grandes Mares’ and meet a 2m cat shark, 1.5m stingray and the bamboo / grey carpet sharks, grouper and more.
The sharks are obviously happy with their environment as this week the second generation of shark eggs (Chiloscyllium punctatum otherwise known as the Grey Carpet / Bamboo Shark) have been laid and if you look at the photo (left) carefully, you can see the baby shark developing inside.
The aquarium has three touch tanks where children (and adults) can get personal with some marine life such as starfish and sea cucumbers. The centre is also very environmental aware and the last tank contains a variety of rubbish that has been found around the Lanzarote coast – the reason for this tank, is to educate our children and increase the awareness of how much damage our rubbish can cause our local marine life. The Aquarium always support the Costa Teguise beach clean up event with lots of fun projects for the children to take part in.
The Lanzarote Aquarium is open from 10:00 to 18:00 for more information, please see their website www.aquariumlanzarote.com or telephone 928 590 069.
