Jolateros Workshop, 29th March - 3rd April 2010

Talleres de Jolateros The Cabildo de Lanzarote have organised a second workshop for the Easter school holidays called the Taller de Construcción de “Jolateros” y Taller de Navegación y Regatas de “Jolateros” where local children can attend classes to learn how to build and navigate the traditional tin boats called Jolateros. It’s important for the island that these traditional games are not lost, the Regata de Jolateros are great fun for participants and spectators.

Students that enrol in the course will learn how to make a new jolatero boat by shaping a metal drum right through to painting the design. Once built the children will have the opportunity to understand the skills of buoyancy and how to propel and steer the boat using the shovels or oars as well as the race regulations. The first course was in February and there may be others held during April and May according to the demand for places.

The classes will be held on the beach at El Reducto in Arrecife, any students must be able to swim and have authorisation from their parents. For more information or for inscriptions please call 928 810 100 (extension 2187) or mobile 652 076 295.
