Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote

The Jameos del Agua was one of Manrique's early works, originally built in 1968. It can seem a curious place, but it has an amazing air of tranquillity and peace. Essentially, it consists of a large underground cave (which connects to the Cueva de los Verdes) and an amazing underground lagoon. Entering the first part via steps you will find a restaurant which serves excellent tapas and drinks. You will then walk along the side of the lake, which contains thousands of tiny albino, blind crabs. The water is crystal clear, as it has passed from the sea, being filtered by the lava. Emerging on the other side of the lake you will enter the swimming pool area which is used three times a week as an outdoor nightclub. Climbing again, you will enter the Casa del Volcanes (house of the volcanoes) which monitors seismic activity on the island as well as providing interesting information about the geology and fauna to be found in Lanzarote. Look out for the incredible mirrored tunnels.

There is an auditorium, which seats 600 in a cave beyond the swimming pool. This is used for regular concerts throughout the year.

This would make an excellent visit combined with the Cueva de los Verdes which you will see immediately opposite.
