Islas Canarias Santa Pro 2010, News & Results

ASP_WaveThe Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star PRIME Men's Event - Islas Canarias Santa Pro came to a close yesterday during phenomenal weather conditions, Lanzarote was on yellow alert for strong winds and waves. Surfers loved the epic conditions in the middle of the competition with day three of the event enjoying the wave at La Santa Right.

Day 1 San Juan 27/10

Waves in the 3-4ft (1-1.5m) range were on offer throughout the morning session of competition. With the afternoon cross-shore trade winds and the high tide, event officials were forced to call a halt to proceedings.

Day 2 La Santa 28/10

An overnight change in swell direction and a building swell in the 3-4ft range made for a promising outlook early this morning as camp was packed up and moved to the main back up site on the northern western side of the island. A series of calls were made throughout the day to no avail as the wind strength remained through the afternoon. Despite the increase in swell as the day progressed it was the strong, at times gale force winds, which made it impossible to surf the wave properly. The general comment from those who ventured out to test ‘The Right’ at La Santa was that the force of the wind coming up the wave face was too strong to be surfable.

The (ASP) PRIME Islas Canarias Santa Pro witnessed an epic day of competitive surfing at La Santa Right. Clean lines in the 4-6ft (1.5m) range pumped through the entire day offering some spectacular action which saw 18 heats of Round Two competed. Overnight strong winds abated to leave clean offshore conditions with consistent sets wrapping down the point. The swell direction turned to the north during the afternoon making the sections run faster and closer along the point.

Jonathan Gonzalez (Tenerife, CNY) 30, entered from the waiting list and was “stoked” to be participating at the event. He ignited the right-hander at La Santa early this morning with an incredible display of power surfing obtaining the highest two-wave combined total of 17.50 out of 20. Gonzalez was very pleased with the scores “Since I was a child I have been surfing here in Lanzarote so I know the wave pretty well “he explained.

It was the first time for Julian Wilson (AUS) to surf the La Santa Right, he scored at heat of 16.53 and said “This wave is really fun and it was my first surf out there so I am excited to get that first heat out of the way”

Day 4 San Juan 30/10

The (ASP) PRIME Islas Canarias Santa Pro was forced to go on hold several times due to a varying swell direction that made conditions at times small and inconsistent. Round two was completed in the morning and only a handful of heats of Round Three were able to be run during an afternoon session with the incoming tide. Event officials had a hectic day picking the best windows of swell during the various stages of the tide. The predicted northerly swell did not kick in at full strength causing long lulls during the 25-minute battles.

Epic Conditions Day 3 Aquashot ASP Europe Heitor Alves (Fortaleza/Ceara, BRA) blasted his way into Round Four with an impressive array of forehand manoeuvres on the rippable left at San Juan to claim a two-wave combined total of 17.78 out of 20. Alves said “I had a good heat right now for sure. This is my fourth time here and I love surfing this left and the other points on the island. I had two good waves with two good scores and I made an air so I am really happy with the result.”

Day 5 San Juan 31/10

The (ASP) PRIME Islas Canarias Santa Pro held a marathon day of competition in anticipation of a possible final day to be held at the slab known as ‘La Santa Left’. Forecasts show a savage 10ft (3m) swell to hit overnight with strong off-shore winds for the bay at La Santa. San Juan offered waves in the 4-5ft (1.5m) range with moderate cross-shore winds providing more than adequate conditions for the strong field of surfers as they took to the air in an incredible display of modern innovative performance surfing.

Tanner Gadauskas (San Clemente CA, USA) scored the highest single score of the event with a near perfect 9.80 out of 10 on a long peeling left that ran along the reef perfectly in his Round Four match-up which also saw Glen Hall (IRL) advance leaving John John Florence (HAW) in third position. The powerful goofy footer smashed out a combined two wave heat total of 17.70 out of 20 and has kept his momentum rolling and is enjoying his time at the Islas Canarias Santa Pro.

Day 6 San Juan 1/11

An unstoppable Heitor Alves (Fortaleza/Ceara, BRA) claimed the ASP PRIME Islas Canarias Santa Pro taking out Cory Lopez (Florida, USA) on a wild final day of action at the left point break of San Juan. A rampaging Alves was never challenged during the entire day as the 27-year-old took one giant step to securing his position on the 2011 ASP World Tour. Swells in the 6-8ft (2-2.5m) range and strong on-shore winds combined to produce a savagely wild day of surfing that tested the remaining surfers to their limits. Event officials inspected other breaks early morning eventually deciding to run at San Juan which offered a long walling left despite the winds.

ASP_Day_6An ecstatic Alves leaves Europe with a ‘hat-trick’ of victories following wins in the ASP Men’s Star Series 6-Star events in Zarautz and Figueira da Foz he said “Now I am relaxed with this result and I can go to Hawaii knowing that hopefully I am on the World Tour next year”.

Runner-up Cory Lopez (USA) came closest to pinning back a storming Alves with his never-say-die performance in the final. “Heitor was on fire all day and every heat he was getting big scores.”  Lopez pulled off an incredible close-out lip launch to oust Neve in the dying seconds. Claiming the score as the crowd erupted on the beach, Lopez knew he had the score he wanted. “The quarter-final was a tough heat for me. I was losing the whole time and I couldn’t get any waves so lucky that last wave came to me. I was super happy with that and the last manoeuvre I was pretty stoked because you don’t pull turns like that all the time. I gave it a little claim which was pretty funny.”

Miguel Pupo (BRA) 18, also finished equal 3rd going down to Cory Lopez in a tight low scoring semi-final to claim his best result in an ASP Prime event. The current ASP South America Junior champion was pleased with his performance through the entire event and the tough conditions did not go in his favour “The conditions out there are really crazy and it is like being in a washing machine or something like that.”
