Increase in Foreign Residents

The number of foreign residents increased by 4.4% during 2010 in the Canary Islands.

According to the European Centre for the Study of Migration Flow the Canary Islands had a total of 250,033 foreign residents holding a valid residencia certificate living within the islands as of the 31st December 2010. The figures by country of origin were interesting with Germany in first place, United Kingdom second and Italy in third place.

Provinces of the Canary Islands Germany 28,301

United Kingdom 25,295

Italy 23,352

Colombia 21,110

Morocco 19,090

Cuba 11,785

China 8,653

The province of Las Palmas including the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria was registered as having 139,647 foreign residents with Santa Cruz de Tenerife 110,386 covering Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma.

I was surprised to see Italy in third place, certainly we’ve seen an increase in Italians in Lanzarote over the past year or two but I hadn’t realised that there was anything like that number of Italians living in the Canaries. It was also interesting to note that this increase which is compared to 2009 took place during the “crisis” at a time where it was believed that foreigners were heading back home.
