If you were in Lanzarote this weekend, it would have been hard to miss the rally cars racing around the island! The III Rally de Lanzarote was held on the 27th & 28th June 2009 in Yaiza, but the cars had a range of circuits to complete around the island. The rally was the third and final stage for the Campeonato de España de Rallys de Tierra 2009, the first stage was held at Palma del Río in March, the second was at Guijuelo, Salamanca in May.
The route for the final stage covered 265.73 km around the island of Lanzarote, there were 5 timed circuits (tramo) with a total of 75.46 km (see the map left). Tramo X was in Yaiza, Tramo A San Bartolomé, Tramo B Puerto del Carmen, Tramo C Tinajo and Tramo D Teguise. There were 21 National and 13 Local Canarian participants, the local and favourite to win was Lanzaroteño Yeray Lemes, who unfortunately lost this stage of the competition by 55.8 seconds to Xevi Pons but went on to win the overall championship.
