I was dismayed to see the goat bridge in Mala over the main road North to Órzola sprayed with graffiti this month. Both sides of this metal bridge have been sprayed, the message is read when driving from the North towards Arrecife, the other side of the bridge states “banqueros putos” and in the photo “politicos corruptos” in reference to banks and politicians. At first I was really angry for two reasons, why someone had felt the need to deface this bridge and then given the message why it had not been cleaned off. Then I thought about how someone had done this, it had to have been spray painted at night, upside down from the top of the bridge and in reverse so that it could be read in the rear view mirror. Obviously someone who felt really strongly about their cause. Why though has it been allowed to stay? In my mind if graffiti is not cleaned off or painted over then it’s giving people who deface property a message that it’s ok – surely the best deterrent is to remove the message by what ever means to discourage a repeat performance. It wouldn’t cost much to employ a small team from the thousands of unemployed to tackle the graffiti around the island. What do you think? |
