Food Shopping in Lanzarote

The food shops in Lanzarote fall conveniently into four categories:

Tourist Supermarkets
These are based in the resorts and are usually either Netto, HiperDino or Marcial owned. Prices are normally higher, but there is a good selection of international products and they usually have the best selection of booze and tobacco products. Convenient, but costly.

Residential Supermarkets
This sector now consists of the following supermarkets in Lanzarote:

Eurospar Arrecife
Eurospar Costa Teguise
Eurospar Macher
HiperDino Deiland Playa Honda
HiperDino (ex Vivo) Playa Honda
HiperDino Arrecife
HiperDino Playa Blanca
Lidl Arrecife

These are aimed at locals and are much more keenly priced. All have meat and delicatessen counters and a good selection of product, although the goods for sale are skewed towards the Spanish eating style.

These are your best options for finding baby products in Lanzarote.

Into this category, we would also add Congelados Roper who have supermarkets in Playa Blanca, Tías and Playa Honda. They are a frozen food, fresh fruit and vegetable store in Playa Honda, which is terrific value for money.

Local Food Shops
These are out of the resorts and have a limited choice, but can be surprisingly cheap. Places like the fruit and vegetable shop and butchers at Valterra in Arrecife, the garage (yes really!) in Arrieta, and all the other little "Auto Servicios" (self service mini markets) you will see on your travels. Try them you'll be surprised!

Specialist Food Shops

There are any number of these on the island and within them we would include the "English" supermarkets like Gangas or Maceys in Tias, and The English Cash and Carry in Playa Honda. They both stock imported British goods and are the only place you are likely to be able to buy things like horse radish or Oxo cubes and other strangely British stuff!

There is also a Chinese supermarket in Arrecife, and the Yash Mini Market in Puerto del Carmen, which sells all kinds of Indian spices and food.

As a local I use all of these, but essentially I do my main shop at Eurospar or Lidl, buy my meat and fish at Roper, and then use the specialist shops to top up when I need to.
