Allan and Mel, both from Costa Teguise are radio controlled model aircraft enthusiasts, and they kindly invited us along to watch them and take some photos. Their glider launch site is some way off the beaten track, on a small hill behind Teguise, which looks down over the plateau of Famara. Although both use powered aircraft from time to time, it was a perfect day for gliders, with a stiff breeze and the promise of thermals from the sun warming the ground. They flew a variety of models, including a fascinating delta wing without a tail, rudder or fuselage. Conditions were quite tricky, but all the ‘planes made it to earth safely. Several seagulls and a kite paused to watch proceedings and added an amazing backdrop to the gliders. Allan fitted a mini video camera to one of his aircraft and you can see a short segment of the film here: Some related reading: |
