A 64 year old lady died last night in a road traffic accident on the Avenida Islas Canarias in Playa Blanca. The latest accident happened in the vicinity of the Natural Palace Hotel after a vehicle did not obey the traffic signs.
A 19 year old died after the car they were in left the LZ-20 in San Bartolomé and hit a wall on the 10th September. An 18 year old died on the 15th September following a traffic accident in Tinguatón, the car was travelling back to Mancha Blanca after the fiesta de Los Dolores. The problem we face on the island is not necessarily the speed of an accident but the terrain if a vehicle leaves the road. Our volcanic rock is harsh, hard and unforgiving it can also be quite a drop down from the road. During 2009 a series of new road barriers were installed across the island, they may not look fantastic but they save lives in stopping cars from crossing carriageways or leaving the road. There are a number of road works in Lanzarote at the moment, the biggest of which is through Táhiche to widen the LZ-1. Local drivers are very aware of tourists on the roads in hire cars in Lanzarote giving them a bit more space and patience when they see the hire car sticker on the vehicle in front of them. If you are planning to drive when you’re on holiday we would suggest that you read the following for a bit more information on the local traffic laws: Change in traffic laws May 2010 |
