Evington FC are based in Leicester and have a reasonable track record with their veteran team. We were contacted by Gary the goalkeeper some time ago when he asked if we could help him put together a game while the boys were visiting. We put him in touch with Ian Lane, our football writer and UD Lanzarote’s biggest fan, and he in turn put them in touch with Jack Talbot from Colegio Hispano Britannico.
Between them all they managed to arrange a mini tournament, with Puerto del Carmen and La Asomada providing the opposition at the Campo de Futbol in Puerto del Carmen.
Evington were drawn to play the opening two games, and despite the heat and plastic pitch, they gave a reasonable account of themselves, defending strongly to limit their opponents to two goals apiece. Sadly we missed Gary’s save in the first game which he described as a “Wonder” save!
The local teams went on to contest the final, with La Asomada running out 5-1 winners to take the tournament.
It’s a great example of how a local UK team can arrange a bit of a special trip to the island, followed by a few days enjoying our weather and hospitality. And it fits in superbly with our aim to become THE island of sports tourism.
We hope to welcome Evington back to Lanzarote one day.
