Ermita de las Nieves

For those of you on a car tour around the island of Lanzarote, have a look out for the very quaint chapel perched on the top of the mountains Risco de las Nieves (which means snow!), accessed by a small road close to the giant modern windmills through Los Valles on the road from Teguise to Haría.

Las Nieves 2

This church’s name is translated as the Hermitage of the Clouds, quite apt as it’s situated in a desolate position high up on the cliffs and quite often shrouded in cloud. The church was dedicated to the Virgin of las Nieves, the locals used to climb up the slope to the chapel and pray here for rain when it was desperately needed.

On the 5th August each year there are pilgrimages to this tiny church, from the local towns of Teguise and Haría. The Haría group leaves the main plaza to walk up the steep climb of the Valle de Malpaso and along the Risco de Famara enjoying some splendid views down to Famara and La Graciosa
