The sports minister Manolo Cabrera and Edgar Ette from Enduroman Ltd are pleased to confirm that a new International Sporting Challenge is to be launched in Lanzarote from 2011. The first Enduroman Double Iron Lanzarote will be held in Playa Blanca from the 4th – 6th February 2011. The island of Lanzarote is all ready renown for its tough Ironman event held each May, that involves a swim of 3.8km, bike of 180km and run of 42.2km that must be completed in one day from 7am until the finishing line closes at midnight. The Enduroman Double Iron Lanzarote (E.D.I.L.) has a swim of 7.6km (4.8 miles), bike course of 360km (224 miles) and run of 85km (52 miles)!! This ultra distance triathlon takes place over 3 days: The swim of 7.6km is 5 laps of the course which has to be completed within 4 hours, this section is based along the coast in front of the Hotel Calimera. The bike course of 360km has 6 laps and must be completed within 22 hours, the cyclists ride out of Playa Blanca to El Golfo and back. The run course is a small circuit of 2.73km and the 30 laps must be finished within 30 hours. The race starts at 14:00 on Friday the 4th February and closes at 08:00 Sunday the 6th, athletes are provided with a sleeping marquee and food station during the race and are expected to rest when required between laps, Enduroman want every athlete to be able to finish the event. The first Enduroman Double Iron Lanzarote event will be limited to 400 athletes, the entry fee is €290 until the 1st October 2010 then the price increases to €350. February was chosen as the best month for to hold the E.D.I.L. as this is normally an off season for triathletes, many of whom are already visiting Lanzarote for winter training. It’s great news for the resort of Playa Blanca too, the Ironman Lanzarote course does not cover this area of the island as its predominantly staged in Puerto del Carmen. |
