If you haven't driven this way before, stop at the top in the lay by to admire the panoramic view down the valley to Tabayesco and to the coastal villages of Punta Mujeres and Arrieta. This road isn’t for those afraid of heights, its carved into the steep hillside and although the road is narrow, there is traffic in both directions including buses and water lorries. This section of road is also loved by cyclists and part of the Lanzarote Ironman circuit held in May and the Lanzarote motor rally's have a timed section including this road from Tabayesco up to Los Helechos - the next one is the 18-19th December 2009. I’ve known passengers gasp with delight at the views offered through the descent but others that screamed and kept their eyes shut until we were down! It's definitely worth driving this road when exploring Lanzarote, just take your time, keep to the right side of the road and if unsure beep at the bends to warn other drivers (although not necessary). We took this video of the drive down in April, the hillsides are really green compared to these photos taken recently. Lanzarote’s Forest, Bosque de Haría |
