A Guardia Civil patrol boat spotted the whale and alerted SECAC (Sociedad para el Estudio de los Cetáceos en el Archipiélago Canario) who recovered the body for examination to be conducted back at their facilities in Puerto Calero.

Vidal Martín the president of SECAC said that the death of the whale must have been very recent as the body was still cool. An autopsy will now be performed to determine the cause of her death, sadly this particular whale was known to the SECAC team and has been spotted and recorded by their biologists for years.

Studies will also be carried out by the computer forensic specialists from the Instituto Universitario de Sanidad Animal de la Universidad in Gran Canaria as it’s important to understand why the whale died in order to protect them.

Extensive research has been carried out by SECAC in the waters surrounding Lanzarote and Fuerteventura to understand the presence, distribution and habitat of beaked whales in this area. Vidal Martín said that species of Cuvier’s, Blainville’s and Gervais beaked whales have all been recorded as living in our waters which doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.
