Where can you go to escape the heat of ths sun? The answer is the The Cueva De Los Verdes (The Green Caves) in the North of the island, situated between Arrieta and Orzola. These caves were formed 3,000 years ago when Mount Corona erupted. The caves are more than 7km in length and are believed to be the largest in the world. The visitors are grouped and regular tours take you underground. The tunnels are spectacularly lit with ambient music that leaves you feeling calm and tranquil. The tour guides are multi lingual and will explain in Spanish, German and English. The tour itself is through 2km of the tunnel and lasts approximately 1 hour. One of the caves has been converted to an auditorium, the natural acoustics are used for musical and cultural events. The whole experience is awesome and will leave you with a sense of wonder and peace, as you explore the incredible natural formations. Remember to take a fleece or light jacket and to wear sensible shoes, although there is no serious caving involved! Look out for the fantastic surprise towards the end of the tour!

A visit to the Cueva de los Verdes can be shared with a visit to Jameos del Agua which is just across the road. If you have also visited the Montanas del Fuego during your stay you will have seen both the source and the outflow to sea of the volcanic eruptions.

Young children are welcome although buggies would have to be left behind, not practical for wheelchairs.
