Corpus Christi The alfombras de sal (salt carpets) are spectacular, hundreds of locals will take to the streets around Lanzarote this weekend to create wonderful brightly coloured murals made from Lanzarote sea salt as part of the Corpus Christi celebration, the local Catholic churches will walk over the carpets the following day as part of their Eucharist service.

Arrecife

More than 600 people are expected to create 30 carpets from 16:00 on Saturday in the centre of Arrecife. The Ayuntamiento of Arrecife have ordered 30 tonnes of salt from the salinas (salt pans) at Los Cocoteros and Janubio in keeping with tradition at a cost of €10,000. All different clubs and groups from the community will work through the night to create their carpets. The procession will leave the San Ginés Church at 13:30 on Sunday.

San Bartolomé

Residents of San Bartolomé will be working in the streets of Calles Párroco San Martín, San Simón and the Plaza León y Castillo from 10:00 on Saturday 5th.

Haría

Haría normally prepare their alfombras de sal on the Sunday morning and this year is no different, the villagers will be out in force from 08:00 creating their masterpieces. The carpets will be in Calle de Encarnación Rodríguez  that runs parallel to the Plaza. Haría is decked out in flags to mark the start of their fiesta for San Juan which lasts almost a month.

We would expect La Villa de Teguise to have the salt carpets too but have been unable to find a programme with the details.
