It was even before I moved to the island, when I first came on holidays to Lanzarote that I first heard this man's voice. I was immediately blown away by his energetic and eclectic performances.
So it's a great opportunity to get to know him a bit better...
Do you have a stage name?
I use the name Collie Farrell (my name is actually Colm) for my work. It's not a typical stage name. More a nick name that just stuck. More people know me as Collie than Colm. Family and close friends prefer to use the latter.
Where are you from originally?
I am originally from Dublin, Ireland. My Mother and sister still live there.
How long have you lived in Lanzarote? What brought you here & more importantly, what made you stay?
I have lived in Lanzarote for almost 8 years, 8 wonderful years I might add. I came over in 2005 at the request of a friend of mine who was opening a bar. He thought I would be good for his business and indeed that is what happened. We only parted company last July after 7 very successful years. All good things come to an end. I then got the job as fronting the band in Charlie's bar along with the fantastic Siobhan Bell. She's a great female vocalist, also from Dublin. (I can vouch for that myself, Siobhan's voice is great and together with Collie, they are dynamite!). I am married and have 2 children living with me here. I say that because I have three children in Ireland. I use the word children lightly as they are 19, 15 and 13 yrs old!!
What do you play? Or do you sing?
I am a singer. I've been singing since a very early age. I did my first paid gig at the age of 16 and gigged semi professionally right up to the age of 32. I then made the decision to become a full time vocalist and I have never looked back. I have seen many beautiful places because of what I do. But Lanzarote remains for me the most beautiful. It is an awe inspiring place. The lovely beaches, the rugged volcanic landscape, the sunsets and sunrises. But for me it's the tranquillity that's just blows me away. I realise now that I never relaxed until I got here!!!! My favourite place is the small village where I live. It's called Yaiza and is a haven and an Eden for me.
They don't call it the Paradise Island for nothing, I guess. So, musically, who is your idol or inspiration?
I have many idols, because I listen to every type of music. Were I to pick one, it would have to be Frank Sinatra. The most incredible singer to have ever lived.
His phrasing, diction and tone are second to none. But for me it is the conviction and feeling and pure emotion in his singing. When he sang a song, he lived that song. My latest project is a show based on the music of such greats as Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis jnr, Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Louis Prima and the newcomers, Harry Connick Jnr and the housewives favourite, Michael Buble.
When and where do you have regular gigs?
I've been performing nightly from Monday to Saturday from 12:30 to 3:30 at Charlie's bar in Centro Atlantico in Puerto del Carmen. But is closed now till New Year's Eve. When it reopens come in and say hello. It's a great night with "The Belles Tones with Collie Farrell".
Anything else you'd like to tell our readers?
I would also like to remind your readers that we have an amazing Big band here, aptly named "Collie Farrell and The Lanzarote Big Band".
It is one of only two such bands in the whole of the Canary Islands. A wonder assembly of 11 of the finest musicians from all corners of the globe including some Canarian musicians. We play in different venues and recently we took part on the Help for Heroes outdoor concert also. Keep your eyes and ears open for these shows or watch our Facebook page LanzaroteBigBand. Or you can even book us for your event, Christmas or otherwise. Our agenda is filling up but we still have a few dates available
Wow, that is such a different music style (& look!) from what you sing at Charlies! You are truly versatile!
Finally, what is the best way to keep updated on your performance's?
Anybody who wants an update on my carry on need just watch the Charlie's Facebook page Charlies.Bar.Lanzarote or their website www.charlieslanzarote.com or email me at [email protected]. Or alternatively befriend me on Facebook DeanneandColm.
In the words of Sinatra, take it "Nice and Easy". ¡Hasta luego!!!!!.
Good advice indeed. Hasta luego, Collie. It's been a pleasure.
