It doesn't even appear on some maps of the island, but Charco del Palo (Paul's puddle in English!) really is a delightful place. Located on the coast at Mala - just turn right on the main road through Mala towards the ocean, Charco is not well known as it's a naturist village. This means you will see naked people both on the streets and by the sea, so if you're offended by that don't visit. Charco consists of a couple of small holiday complexes and a good number of residential bungalows, as well as a tiny shopping centre and a couple of great restaurants. Visit Peter's pub (run by Riener) for great value food - especially his legendary "all you can eat" rib nights! Follow the road through the houses right to the sea, and you'll look down to an area known locally as The Monkey Rocks. Steps lead down to a flat, rocky area perfect for sunbathing (and getting an all over tan), and then into a sheltered bay accessed by steps the local residents have put in. This is one of the island's best places for snorkeling and scuba diving, and you'll always see divers entering and exiting the water here. Where the road ends and becomes a track on the north side of the village, you can hop out of the car and walk all the way to Arrieta, enjoying the large sandy areas and some fantastic views en route. You don't have to be a naturist to visit Charco del Palo, so feel free to have a look at the village, but don't take photos of people while you're there - it's not a place for voyeurs.
