The Canary Islands are now the 5th most popular destination in the world over the Easter period, behind, London, New York, Prague and Berlin. Holiday giant Expedia has also revealed that the islands have received the most enquiries and bookings on their Spanish site, and this suggests a big increase in domestic tourism on the back of ever growing international tourist numbers so far this year. The increase in tourism from the Spanish mainland over the last couple of years has been astonishing, and it has really changed the dynamic here in Lanzarote, with the more rural areas enjoying a boom as the mainlanders seem to prefer to stay out of the resorts and explore the island’s more untouched areas. Combined with a growth of 6% in January and a whopping 23% in February of foreign tourists coming to Lanzarote, the extra influx from the peninsular should result in a bumper first half of 2011 for the island.
