The 30th of May is the Día de Canarias, a time to celebrate the old traditions and enjoy the culture of Canarian life. A whole host of events have been announced starting from this weekend and through next week, Wednesday is also a fiesta holiday. The date is commemorative of the first session in Canarian Parliament which was held on the 30th May 1983.
Sunday 27th May
10:00 – 13:00 Teguise will celebrate the Día de Canarias at the market on Sunday with special activities in the Carpa de La Villa which is the big white tent on Plaza Maretas. Visitors to the market will be able to sample local tapas dishes from three local restaurants Casa Cristóbal, La Tahona and El Chiringuito such as costillas con piñas (ribs with pineapple), caldo de millo (soup with millet), the price is €3 per sample including a glass of wine. There will be traditional musical entertainment from Agrupación Folclórica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, sporting displays of Lucha Canaria and Pelotamano and farming exhibition showing how corn is processed.
Tuesday 29th May
21:00 A free concert will be held at the Teatro Insular in Arrecife, tickets are limited to 2 per person and should be collected from the office at the theatre on the 28th & 29th (08:00 – 15:00) prior to the concert. The concert will be performed by Jóvenes Cantadores (Young Singers), the evening opens with a rendition of the Canarian anthem then a speech by Pedro San Ginés, the President of the Cabildo. The group which has 12 musicians aged between 16 – 25 will then perform a selection of songs from their two albums Homenaje and Parranda y CienporCien.

21:00 Tenderete Canario with performances from Coral Villa de Teguise, 3ª edad de Teguise, Acatife, Guagime, La Pichona, La Gran Aldea, Guanapay, Parranda Los Valles and Parranda Teseguite.

Until 6am Special session for the eve of Día de Canarias with Borja Maneje, Marcos Vilar and Carl V.
Plaza de la Ermita – Tías
18:00 – 20:00 Exhibition of Lucha, traditional folklore music, tastings, horse ride and activities for children.
Wednesday 30th May
Old Harbour – Puerto del Carmen
11:00 – 22:00 A traditional day has been planned for the Plaza Varadero in the old harbour area of Puerto del Carmen. The craft stalls open at 11:00, the opening ceremony for the day is at 11:30, live folk music at 12:00, Bola Canarias at 12:30, Lucha Canaria at 17:00 and more folk music at 19:00.

10:00 Donkey rides
12:00 – 16:30 A special lunch is available priced at €14.95 per person excluding drinks will be served which includes a starter of morcilla dulce al cilantro y quesos isleños (sweet sausage with corriander and cheese from the island), sancocho de cherne con batata, gofio y mojo (a fish stew with sweet potato, gofio and mojo) for the main course and a torrijas con miel (french toast with honey) o una mini tartaleta de bienmesabe (bienmesabe tart) for dessert.
There will be traditional musical entertainment during the afternoon, with activities for the children including games, painting and balloon modelling.

Aquapark – Costa Teguise
The waterpark in Costa Teguise is offering a 2 x 1 admission for the Día de Canarias. They will be offering tasting of local products including cheeses, potatoes, mojo salsas and wine during the day. Entertainment has been organised with Batucada Menuda Caña, Bob Esponja, Club de lucha Tao and Lnazuma Yudo Club.
10:00 Opening ceremony for the programme of Día de Canarias in Calle Limones, Playa Blanca including the municipal band, exhibition of Lucha Canaria and Palo Conejero on the town beach.
10:30 Music from Agrupación Folklórica Rubicón and tasting of typical products from Lanzarote.
19:00 Fiesta in the Plaza de Los Remedios with a Tenerete Canario including performances from Los Salíneros de La Hoya and Parranda Janubio.
