Camping in Lanzarote

Camping on the island is great fun, with the weather here being pretty much perfect for getting under canvas all year round. Here's a quick guide to both the official and sanctioned camp sites on the island:

Official

There are three official sites in Lanzarote, all are free of charge and subsidized by the relevant ayuntamientos (town halls).

Famara San Juan Beach
This is a well organized site, at the far end of the beach as you enter the town. There's always one member of the team there to allocate pitches, the site is clean and tidy and right on the beach. The downside is that there is only one public toilet and a single, very open cold water shower.

Please note this campsite is currently closed for 2011

Papayagayo Beach, Playa Blanca
This is the island's largest site, and is also right on the beach. It is well equipped, and has a good toilet block with private showers.

La Graciosa
Camping on La Graciosa is fabulous! Again the site is on the beach, and there are reasonable facilities. La Graciosa is a true "no news, no shoes" island! For more information on La Graciosa and photos of the campsite and facilities, please click La Graciosa.

Please note that reservations have to be made in advance for this campsite: Book La Graciosa online camping

Unofficial

Despite the "No camping" signs, you'll find many people using the beaches at Arrieta and Orzola for a spot of unofficial camping, and nobody seems to mind.

You'll be surprised to see the number of caravans at the official sites - many locals park their 'vans at the sites at the start of the summer and leave them there all through the season. They effectively use them as holiday homes, with the mothers and children spending the long summer holidays in them, and Dad joining them at the weekends. They equip them pretty well - many have washing machines, air conditioning and satellite television!

One thing worth bearing in mind is that Spanish camp sites are noisy places - there is usually a party at night, which will go on until the early hours, and nobody gets up at dawn!

Simple lightweight tents can be bought at many stores on the island, so pick one up and give it a try!

Hi Natasha

The campsites in Lanzarote are run by the Ayuntamiento's (councils) and are offered free of charge! They are generally open from June to September during the local school summer holidays. You just turn up and pitch your tent.

Have fun
