Early reports are emerging of two British nationals who have been detained in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote following a violent attack on a third who died during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The British man died after a fight in a pool area of a hotel complex situated in the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen. The attack took place at 2:30 am on Saturday 26th January, the man in his late 40’s died whilst being transferred to the general hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife.
Two British nationals have been arrested by the Guardia Civil on suspicion of murder, there is no evidence of any weapons used in the attack. The deceased is said to be a man aged 48. An autopsy will be held to determine his cause of death.
The Briton killed during the attack has been identified only as Alan A. The incident took place at the apartment complex Los Fiscos in the resort. Later reports suggest that the victim was knocked unconscious with head injuries after being beaten with a rock, following an altercation between two couples.
The British couple connected with the death of Alan Atkinson have been named as George Thomas Smith and Jane Agnes McCabe. They were remanded to Lanzarote's prison (Centro Penitenciario de Tahíche) without bail, following a court appearance yesterday. They are held on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm to Mr Atkinson.
The autopsy has revealed that the cause of Alan Atkinson's death was a heart attack, which occurred when he was in the health centre following the attack.
Violent deaths are almost unheard of in Lanzarote, the island is in some shock about this incident. Our thoughts are with the man's family at this sad time.
