Anyone who has been on holiday to Lanzarote will know that there is an abundance of places to eat an English fried breakfast in the resorts here. There is much competition with some places offering a plate of bacon, egg, sausage, beans and toast for as little as €2. I’d like to tell you about somewhere a bit different to go for a change from the norm.
We fancied somewhere for brunch on a lazy Sunday morning, we wanted to eat a hearty breakfast in a nice location and chill out reading the paper. We were already in Puerto del Carmen and wondering where to go when it came to us, we’d try McSorley’s at the marina in Puerto Calero.
There were some different options on the menu such as Scottish kippers, steak and eggs and salmon benedict as well as the usual favourites. It was very nearly an American style breakfast but then I opted for eggs benedict followed by pancakes at the last minute for a real pig out!
The eggs benedict has to be the best breakfast I have eaten in a long time if ever. It really was superb, the muffin was light and toasted, great quality thick bacon and perfectly poached eggs on top with a hollandaise dressing. I was full and wondered how on earth I was going to manage the pancakes which I’d ordered. Taking a breather in between courses, I asked for a second cup of tea and tucked into my pancakes with oodles of maple syrup poured over them. The pancakes were thin and light rather like French crepes than fluffy American style so was I just able to finish the plateful although I’d think twice about ordering two breakfasts here in future.
Pricewise, yes, it does cost more than your average restaurant along the strip for breakfast but they do offer something a little bit special. The eggs benedict was €5.50 and pancakes €4.95, a standard breakfast is €4.95. McSorley’s also has WiFi available which is great if you need to have a working breakfast or just catch up on your emails in the morning. They open at 9am and breakfast is served until midday.
