The new mayor of Tías, José Francisco Hernández announced that the beaches of Puerto del Carmen are looking better than in previous summers as he proudly hoisted the blue flag for 2011 at Playa Grande this week. Four beaches in the resort of Puerto del Carmen currently have the European blue flag status for 2011, they are Playa Grande (officially called Playa Blanca), Playa Chica (officially called Pila la Barrilla), Matagorda and Los Pocillos. There is a strict criteria for a beach to be awarded a blue flag status they have to have environmental education and information on display, good quality of water, environmental management of the beach, safety and services such as lifeguards and wheelchair accessibility. The mayor pictured above with councillors Nerea Santana (tourism) and Yolanda García (beaches) said that “the Blue Flag award is not only recognition given to these four beaches of Puerto del Carmen, but also the efforts of all and should serve as a stimulus to further define and implement the new model of tourism that we want for our municipality." |
