Big Band Sinatra Show, 30th May 2010

If you are in Puerto del Carmen today then try and catch the only big band on Lanzarote at Mulligans Bar on the strip.

Sinatra Gig This show is only on once a month, on the last Sunday in the month.

I went at the end of April with my in laws who are Jazz aficionados and they couldn’t have been more impressed.

Colm Farrell, resident entertainer in Mulligan’s, sings with the band and it has always been his dream to put together a big band to do all the Sinatra numbers. This is a big band!

Comprising nine classically trained musicians, this is no ordinary pub gig!

It is a fabulous international mix of talents, with an Irish man fronting the band with Hungarian keyboard, clarinet and bass players, Lanzarote men on trumpet and drums, Dutch ever youthful septuagenarian on tenor sax, Cuban trombonist, and guitarist from Uruguay.

Only in Lanzarote would you find such an interesting mix of people. Plus they are only one of two orchestra bands in the Canaries at the moment.

Big Band Sinatra Zsolti Kovac plays keyboards and is the musical director.  You have got to witness the superb precision and control of the musicians led by this very talented guy.

Matty Lubo plays bass and double bass, with Alix Janson on guitar.

Tomas Molnar plays both clarinet and alto sax, Javier Luzardo is on tenor sax along with Ziggy Pfeffer, Ricardo Vinas plays trombone with Orlando Morales on trumpet.

The pre show starts around 9.30. It’s a jazz combo comprising sax, keyboards, drums, guitar and bass with guest singers. When we were there Deanne Farrell sang, amongst others, my favourite duet of “Something Stupid” with Colm and Ziggy’s wife Ella wowed the crowd with her own special jazz style.

Tonight’s guest singers also include Talulah Atkinson, Lanzarote teenager with a superb voice.

The big band entertains for two hours from 11pm.

There is no entry charge to see the band and the kitchen is open in Mulligan’s with a great value three course dinner priced at only 12€

Let them entertain you!
